Why journal about your dogs?
It might seem strange to write a journal about your dog, but the process can be rewarding, and revealing, in unexpected ways.
Getting our dogs, Fox and Snow, was a big change for our family. We had never had pets before, and we new how much upheaval their arrivals would bring. It felt exciting but risky – something that would change our lives forever.
I wanted to capture this somehow.
I have always loved to write, but keeping a journal about myself has always felt uncomfortable. Journaling about the dogs felt more natural – I was giving them a voice, writing their story, rather than my own.
At first, my entries focused on day-to-day things like their growth and training. But soon, my writing became more reflective.
Training Fox and Snow reshaped my expectations about progress and success. Their joy at small things made me question what it means to be content.
Looking back over my writing a year on, I find I have mapped a progress I never set out to capture: How their story has influenced mine.
